The Midlands Large Model Flying Group

The MLMFG was originally formed as a large model scale group based at Baxterley from an idea that like-minded large RC aircraft modellers had nowhere specific to fly together. This movement gathered momentum and, using ideas spawned by the LMA, whose handbook we use as our guidelines, we moved to our present site at Catton Park, near Lichfield. We have flown from this site since late 1997 and have developed over these years our 20 acre field into a superb flying area. We have a large static caravan as a clubhouse, with an adjacent portaloo bought in 1999. In 2001 we bought a “Fergi” diesel tractor and hydraulic gangs to speed our mowing, which is at present around four acres. By 2002 we had need of some secure storage for our increasing amount of equipment and bought a container, which is sited at our Landlord’s farm. Also in 2002 we bought a small marquee for model storage at our Show. We always look at ways of being self-sufficient, and to this end use our capital for the benefit of our members.

A legacy from Baxterley is our Large Model Show, run as one of the LMA’s now Big Six, in August each year. This is run on a different site on the Catton Estate, and was another reason for the tractor purchase. This show is run and manned by the members, with some welcome help from local Flying Clubs, all helping to turn it into a very enjoyable friendly event. For such a small group we pride ourselves in being very active and have club scale weekends, with camping and barbecues, throughout the year. All family members help and participate at these events. Prior to shows, all members are involved with general site maintenance and with preparation of the show site.
Most of our members are well established modellers, who fly to a good standard. Membership requires all members to attain the LMA Proficiency Test and, as we have an examiner as a member, this is not a problem to arrange. This test is very relevant to flying giant scale models, and most of our members can be seen on the flight line at many of the shows throughout the country. Indeed, many of our members are involved in the WW1 Team which travels to many shows.
We welcome LMA visitors to the flying site, provided prior notice is given to one of our members, to ensure a Group member is present on the day.
Bordered by river and farmland, our flying field is excellent for even the largest model, having only one near neighbour. We do fly fully silenced models, and find even the largest of petrol engines causes us few problems. The Group is limited to 25 members, so the site is rarely if ever crowded. From time to time we have vacancies in the membership, so you will be made welcome if you want to take a look at us. In the first instance, please contact ( our Chairman, Claude Smith) or (David Lowe: Secretary) , unless you are being introduced personally by a member.
The web site shows many members’ models, covering both the sport and scale aspects of large modeling. Photos will be added to or changed from time to time, as well as hopefully useful information.
